An ordinary contest to get things underway and Derby entry Seven Samurai gets our vote of confidence. Expensive Problem and the two newcomers: Balloura and Lii Najma, are others to monitor closely in the betting. The last named is related to Belmez (a high-class middle distance performer for Henry Cecil a few years ago) on her dam's side. And appeals as a fair prospect for the future. Her yard are not really noted for first time out winners, though, and she may be best watched on this occasion. Balloura is by Swain out of a half-sister to Oratorio, so can also be expected to get better with age. She lacks any fancy entries and is obviously been allowed to develop in her own time. She is sure to benefit form the experience this afternoon whatever happens. Expensive Problem has started to get his act together now that he has been stepped up to this trip. This son of Medicean has an alternative engagement in a nursery at Doncaster later in the week and it will be interesting to see where he goes from here. However, Seven Samurai is also getting better with each outing and, with the form of his latest start working out well, the John Hills-trained colt only needs to run up to the level he has shown so far to rid himself of the maiden tag today.
