    Verdict

A big field of maiden claimers is hardly the best of betting mediums, and only a tentative vote goes to Turtle Magic over Ladruca and Winter Mist, with the market likely to prove the best guide to the chances of a whole host of cross-Pennine raiders. Into the latter category fall Tim Easterby's For Nowt and Elliebow, uncle Mick's Roko and Magic Genie, and the Pat Haslam pair Kerry's Blade and Hopelessly Devoted. Any money for any of them should be seriously noted. However, Turtle Magic has plenty of experience and makes the journey up from Bill Turner's Devon yard on a retrieval mission after finishing fourth in similar company at Newcastle. Being a daughter of Turtle Island, she will not mind any more rain that falls, and with Colin Haddon again taking off a valuable seven pounds, she may make the most of her high draw. Ladruca was well down the field on her Newmarket debut but takes a drop in class. She has more growing to do and it is debatable whether her draw in stall four is a help or hindrance. Kevin Darley is an eye-catching booking for debutante Winter Mist, a half-sister to three winners up to a mile and a quarter, so she too is worth at least a mention. For the winner we return to Turtle Magic.
