Verdict

Any number of possible winners line-up for a wide-open maiden, but our pin landed on SONNELLINO ahead of Qudwah, Funky Lady, Fashion Flow and Ayam Zainah. John Gosden has started the season well and his daughter of Singspiel is bred to make a decent sort. She's related to debutant winners as well as horses who act with cut in the ground, not to mention a host of Group winners, so with William Buick up looks one of the more likely players. Qudwah is also from a yard doing well and she's on the shortlist, with further hope gleaned from the fact she's one of only a few of these bred to be at her best around this trip. Richard Hills chooses this one ahead of Alnaseem and we'll take the hint by omitting John Dunlop's filly from our calculations. Ayam Zainah is interesting on paper but the yard have been hitting the crossbar more than they've found the winners' enclosure of late and a similar tale may lie in wait here, especially as this one is bred to be better on quick fround. Funky Lady is another to consider for the Hannon/Hughes combination although the trainer's other runner Belgique isn't discounted and the market will help indicate which is furthest forward. Fashion Flow will appreciate further in time but her trainer does so well with his fillies that we can't rule her out and the fact that the last eight winners of this race have come from eight different trainers tells you how hard it is to solve. One man not yet on that list is John Gosden, but we hope Sonnellino can put that right.
