Verdict

Two 20/1 chances and a 40/1 have won this in the past 10 years with just one successful favourite. Likely to start favourite here after his unlucky run in the Spring Mile at Doncaster is CAPTAIN BERTIE and those who witnessed that effort will want to be on with just a 1lb rise to contend with. He was very well supported that day and but for being impeded twice at crucial stages he would have landed the gamble. Mont Ras finished just in front of him on Town Moor and is entitled to the greatest respect, especially as David O'Meara has booked William Buick for the ride. With the Cecil yard starting the campaign in great form, Emilio Largo looks certain to come in for support after he completed his hat-trick on soft ground at Sandown last July. He's up another 6lb but there's no telling how good he is. Mull Of Killough just failed to catch Brae Hill in the Lincoln and has only been raised 3lb so he has to be on the short-list along with third placed Fury, who was also staying on strongly at the finish. Dubawi Sound made a winning debut over the C&D but only had two runs subsequently and Labarinto, whose only success came on soft ground at Warwick, was a disappointment in a 1m2f handicap here in September. All four of Karaka Jack's victories have been over 7f but he wasn't stopping when scoring at Doncaster earlier this month and all ground conditions come alike to him.
