In depth

Verdict

Not a strong maiden on paper and we will chance Startori against the experienced duo of Luna Landing and Myrtle Bay. Brian Smart is hardly having the most vintage of seasons but on breeding, this is a likely type for this company. Related to a number of performers from seven furlongs upward, this trip should hold no fears and with Bryan Smart boasting a healthy strike rate at the track, there is something to be said for taking a speculative punt on this occasion. Luna Landing stepped up well on his debut run to take second at Redcar. That evidence suggests that today's trip might be on the sharp side even now. Sgt Schultz was thrown in at the deep end when sent out to contest the Chesham Stakes on debut. A respectable performance in a subsequent Lingfield maiden puts him in with a squeak. Myrtle Bay's recent form was boosted by a solid run from Possessed on Thursday night. Drawn low, there are obvious formbook possibilities. Cool Ebony is a speedily bred type who may struggle to stay seven furlongs. Tom Tate's runners are always worth a look when the money is down. The veteran handler sends out Lady Cantankerous. An expensive purchase by that stable's standards - the filly is related to a number of juvenile milers in Europe. European Dream is another to make the acrimonious move from Vicky Haigh to Richard Guest and is another observed in the ring. Startori secures only the most minimal of recommendations in a tricky maiden.
