In depth

Verdict

King Nicholas is taken to gain another course and distance victory, with Beyond Calculation, Jonny Ebeneezer and River Lark others for the short-list. King Nicholas lines up having won two of his last four starts, at Southwell and over track and trip a month ago. He goes well on soft ground so the recent heavy rain will be most welcome and he holds leading claims. Beyond Calculation, without a win since September 2002, has come tumbling down the weights and has shown signs of a revival of late. He too has form over the course and distance and his trainer knows the time of day with sprinters. Jump jockey Timmy Murphy has a rare ride on the Flat, teaming up with Jonny Ebeneezer. The five-year-old came good in non-selling company at Southwell last time and is well-weighted on last year's for. River Lark has failed to progress since landing a maiden handicap at Thirsk last August but showed up well in first-time blinkers at Southwell and should go well for Hayley Turner. In a race not to get too over-excited about, King Nicholas is the pick to come out on top.
