Verdict

It's something of a tradition that Richard Hannon wins the Monday night opener, but while we'll include Sweet Secret and Shooting Party on the shortlist, we prefer the claims of GWENLLIAN. Ian Williams' filly is making her handicap debut, and steps up in trip slightly. The way she stayed on last time out, finishing just outside the frame in a maiden suggests that won't be a problem. Although inexperienced compared with these here, she's not up against any world-beaters. Jim Crowley looks a significant jockey booking (he's got another one with the same yard later on too). Sweet Secret looks the pick of the Hannon pair, and gains weight all round, but only two pounds from the selection, who benefits from the weight for age allowance. Sweet Secret produced her best effort last time out when runner up against her own sex at Haydock. Shooting Party likes to be prominent too, and produced his best for a while last time out, and he's five pounds below his only winning mark, although that was a couple of years ago. Jezza won last time out, but that's his only success in 10 runs. Since then he's been switched to Victor Dartnall's yard, hardly renowned for flat runners, so any support could be significant. However, we're siding with GWENLLIAN.
