In depth

Verdict

The drop back to six can help ADMIRAL COCHRANE get off the mark at the expense of Slip Sliding Away and Gower Sophia. Robert Havlin's mount ran well last time over a furlong further and this consistent colt can get his head in front dropped back to six today, having travelled strongly on each of his last three starts suggesting he has the speed for this. With stall one landed and question marks about plenty we've sided with this one who has been running solidly well off this mark lately. Hopefully his jockey bounces him out and goes on to land a deserved success for the son of Noverre. Slip Sliding Away is interesting for John Best having been outpaced in a decent maiden last time over five furlongs. The form of that race has worked out with the second placed horse winning since and the third running solidly on Sunday at Kempton and so with today's extra furlong sure to help, this unexposed sort could run a very big race. Gower Sophia is another with chances and may be returned a decent price having disappointed at Southwell last time. Having shown a disliking for that very different surface previously that is an effort best ignored and so the fact that the handicapper has seen fit to drop the horse 6lbs for it is a big plus, as is the fact that Mel Brittain's filly was placed off 67 when last here in October and gets to race off 60 today, so whilst the horse is exposed she is handicapped to go well. Fair Bunny did well to win from an in-form sort at Southwell last time but is far from certain to replicate that effort here and would've been more of interest back at the Nottinghamshire venue and so a bigger danger may be Crushing who wasn't beaten all that far last time and should prefer today's distance of six furlongs. A wide-open nursery but one that can go the way of Admiral Cochrane.
