In depth

Verdict

Merweb started odds-on for a Newcastle maiden a fortnight ago but couldn't hold the late thrust of the winner. He makes his handicap debut and wouldn't need much more to get into contention. The Eagle's Nest was beaten a head in a Class 4 handicap at Chelmsford in August and is on a lower mark but it's three years since Steal The Scene won a race. Ascot Week completed a double in the summer including on Tapeta at Newcastle and was nowhere near his best on his latest start at Doncaster. FOXY LADY doesn't look the easiest of rides and needs holding up until the last minute but she has the ability to win again in this company and is just 2lb higher than her victory here three weeks ago. Cascella didn't enjoy soft conditions at Hamilton but her earlier Leicester victory puts her in the picture.
