Verdict

In four runnings of this race, no winner has been returned in single figures so few should be ruled out of calculations. The one that takes our eye is ASHWINDER with Balladiene and Tarawa Atoll completing the short-list. Most of these remain open to improvement and a few more may have their chances transformed by the fitting of headgear or by stepping up in trip. Tarawa Atoll isn't one of those but she has shown a relatively consistent level of form and, as such, deserves a place on the short-list with no concerns about her ability to perform at this level or with regard to her stamina. Balladiene does have her stamina to prove but her pedigree suggests that this trip will be well within her scope and she should relish this easier opportunity. She has shown promise in maidens and wasn't beaten all that far in a nursery last time; she's coming back from a bit of a break but is one to be interested in. The selection has twice come up short in this grade already and has twice seemingly failed to last home over seven furlongs already. That's a couple of the negatives dispensed with so on to the positives. Jimmy Fortune takes over the reins from Gabriel Hannon for the first time, the colt is stoutly bred and was doing all of his best work in the sixth furlong last time and Brian Meehan has a respectable strike rate at the track and in juvenile sellers. That's enough for us to take a chance with Ashwinder.
