Verdict

KINGSGATE NATIVE returned to form with a vengeance at Goodwood and can grab his second Nunthorpe at the main expense of Art Connoisseur and Radiohead. With a plumb draw down the centre, fast ground, and plenty of pace on everything is right for the four-year-old to repeat his 2007 success when with John Best. The colt sweated up plenty before winning with authority last time, so that should not put us off having an interest and he looks the one to beat. Art Connoisseur finished well in front of the selection at Royal Ascot, but Sir Michael Stoute's runner was too bad to be true there and now it is Michael Bell's representative who has it to prove. His was an equally dismal effort in the July Cup and the yard has been in better form. Benbaun owes his connections nothing after a string of valuable wins in an excellent career. However, those successes have included just one in this exhalted company and despite having conditions to suit he is likely to find one or two too good. Amour Propre was well beaten in the King's Stand but with the three-year-old allowance is worth another try against the big boys. Borderlescott won last year's delayed Newmarket renewal after this card was washed out and he commands plenty of respect, but has it all to do to reverse Goodwood form with the selection. Ialysos looked particularly good in the paddock that day but did not match that on the racetrack and a bigger danger may well by Radiohead. Brian Meehan pitches the juvenile in against 16 older opponents, and the Johannesburg colt is completely unexposed and receiving a sizeable allowance. He is drawn just a couple away from the selection and it could be a fascinating battle between the pair, but we will side with the experience of Kingsgate Native to regain this particular crown.
