A smart performance from GENIUS STEP, who appeared to show the benefit of the experience gained from his Newmarket third on debut. That form has worked out very nicely, and he was always in control here, stalking the honest enough pace set by Expense Claim. With Frankie Dettori almost motionless in the saddle he picked up the lead with two to run and quickly put the race to bed, showing a handy enough turn of foot in quite testing conditions. The runner-up closed on him near the line but it was only because Dettori had eased up the winner and he was value for more than the length and a half winning distance. Connections suggested that there are no firm plans for the son of Dubawi at present, and it would be no surprise to see him put away for the year as he still looks a bit on the weak side. However he is certainly progressing and learning and it is unlikely that handicaps will feature in his near future. Runner-up Okimono, a stablemate of the winner, ran well in second. He travelled well for a long way, getting a good tow through in midfield throughout, and had to make his challenge between runners as the race started to hot up. That should have taught him plenty, and it was encouraging how well he then stayed on to chase his compatriot. His pedigree suggests he might be more of a two-year-old than the winner, but the fact that he has only made his debut now would suggest he's been a little behind. Third home, and giving the form some substance, was Expense Claim. He set the pace despite a slightly awkward start and kept on well when headed. He's unlikely to be gifted a generous mark after this but this was probably a step forward. The disappointment of the race was Shomberg who had shaped well on debut but he seemed to resent something here, and the way he carried his head awkwardly might suggest the most obvious reason was the ground. However his Hamilton form looks ropey and he's not one to follow too closely. More promising runs came from Sunley Pride and Shredding, especially the latter. He was outpaced turning for home, and this stoutly-bred gelding wasn't given a hard time. However he ran on well under hands and heels and looks a certainty when stepped up in trip next time.
