Bournemouth have agreed a deal to sign Benik Afobe from Wolves for a club-record £10m fee

Bournemouth have agreed a deal to sign Wolves striker Benik Afobe, the Premier League club's manager, Eddie Howe, has confirmed.

The Cherries emerged during the week as the front-runners to sign the 22-year-old and put in a £10m bid on Friday.

If the deal goes through, Afobe would become Bournemouth's new record signing, following in the wake of Tyrone Mings, who joined for £8m from Ipswich last summer.

Afobe, who has scored 10 goals in 27 appearances this season, is set to undergo a medical after arriving at the club on Sunday morning.

The Cherries are currently 16th in the Premier League, four points clear of the drop zone, but are short on depth in attack, with Callum Wilson having picked up a long-term knee injury in September.

After his side's 2-1 win over Birmingham in the FA Cup third round, Howe said: "A deal has been agreed. There are still hurdles for us to overcome, but we hope he'll sign in time for Tuesday night [home to Norwich].

"He'll bring strength, power and, hopefully, goals. We'll be excited to see him for AFC Bournemouth if the deal gets completed.

"I felt we needed a striker. Callum we lost and that was a huge blow to us and we have lost Josh King with hamstring problems. It has left us very light and we need firepower. We need players who can come in and do the job.

"The players we have here proved they can do a job - [Glenn] Murray came off the bench and scored and it was good to see Lee Tomlin score. But we are light on the ground and, hopefully, he [Afobe] will add competition for places and real quality in the position."

Bournemouth have already agreed the signing of Roma winger Juan Iturbe on loan until the end of the campaign.

Afobe did not play for Wolves in their 1-0 FA Cup defeat at West Ham on Saturday.

Manager Kenny Jackett said: "Benik Afobe is in talks with Bournemouth about a potential transfer. We have accepted their bid. The fee is undisclosed, but it is a significant amount

"Of course, we will miss him. He's our top scorer and you only have to look at what he has done for us in a short time here. Finding those forwards who make a difference is a tough thing, that's why you have to work hard to keep them."
