Former NFL quarterback Tony Romo faces a battle to make the cut on his PGA Tour debut after struggling to an opening-round 77 at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.
The ex-Dallas Cowboys star, a sponsor's invite in the Dominican Republic, was level-par at the turn but struggled on the back nine to slip 14 shots adrift of early pacesetter Brice Garnett.
Romo three-putted the opening hole and failed to get up-and-down from the rough on his way to a dropped shot at the next, before saving par at the third and posting a close-range gain at the par-five fourth.
The 37-year-old drained a 35-foot birdie at the fifth and cancelled out another three-putt at the seventh by picking up a shot at the par-four next, only to slip down the leaderboard on his second nine.
A bogey at the 13th was followed by a stray tee shot and a double-bogey at the par-five next, with back-to-back blemishes over his next two holes seeing him slip to five over for the round.
Garnett topped the leaderboard after nine birdies in a blemish-free round, with Irish duo Paul Dunne and Seamus Power opening with scores of 67 and 68 respectively.
