Russia's Yuliya Zaripova has been stripped of the gold medal she won in the women's 3,000 metres steeplechase at the 2012 London Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Monday.

Zaripova, who tested positive for turinabol, was among 12 athletes, including seven medallists, who were disqualified from their events following re-testing of samples, the IOC said.

Nine of the 12 are weighlifters, with the other three coming from athletics, and all 12 are from Russia or former Soviet republics.

The IOC has re-tested hundreds of samples from the Beijing and London Games this year, catching an additional 98 cheats, with two more waves of re-testing due to come.

The news comes on the day the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) told Russia what steps it must take before its Paralympic athletes are allowed to compete again on the world stage.

The IPC has developed a set of "reinstatement criteria" with the World Anti-Doping Agency that the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC) must meet before its pre-Rio suspension is lifted.

Russia's entire team was banned from September's Paralympic Games when the IPC chose to follow WADA's call for strong sanctions after the publication of Canadian law professor Richard McLaren's interim report into state-sponsored doping.

An IPC statement read: "Although there is no timeline for the RPC to implement the changes required, we want to work closely with them in order to bring about the necessary changes sooner, rather than later.
