Japan's Miki Ando won her second world title ahead of Olympic champion Kim Yu-Na in Moscow.
Ando, 22, reclaimed the title she last won in 2007 after overnight leader Kim struggled on her jumps in the free programme.
The 20-year-old Kim had been competing for the first time since losing her world title last year to Japan's Mao Asada.
But with just a 0.33-point lead on Ando after the short programme the South Korean had no room for error and despite nailing her opening triple-triple her normally solid jumps let her down.
Ando two-footed the landing on her triple toeloop combination jump but her skate was enough to take the gold, scoring 195.79 overall to Kim's 194.50.
European champion Carolina Kostner of Italy took bronze with 184.68.
In the ice dancing, Meryl Davis and Charlie White upset Olympic champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir to take America's first ever world championship gold medal in the event.
Canadian partnership Virtue and Moir had to settle for silver while American siblings Maia and Alex Shibutani grabbed the bronze medal.
