Legend Killer Randy Orton overcame the toughest test of attrition and courage to prevail as the 2009 Royal Rumble winner in Detroit.
Another 30 superstars battled it out in the over-the-top-rope format for the right to challenge in a championship match of the winner's choosing at WrestleMania, however it was Orton who was left as the last man standing.
The Legend Killer's sensational victory comes just days after he unleashed a savage punt to the skull of Vince McMahon, a move which could yet scupper his title charge.
After entering the Rumble at No.8, Orton eliminated powerhouses Kane, The Big Show and finally bitter rival Triple H to reign supreme.
Moscow Mauler Vladimir Kozlov dominated the early stages, effortlessly flinging MVP, Carlito and The Great Khali over the top rope before falling foul of The Game.
Kozlov was one of six superstars eliminated by Triple H, who, after entering at No.7 set up a final showdown against Legacy members Cody Rhodes, Ted DiBiase and Orton before the Legend Killer took his chance.
Cena expertly defended his crown by defeating JBL in an epic title fight earlier in the evening.
In a match riddled with controversy after Shawn Michaels gave both men a dose of Sweet Chin Music, HBK dragged the 'Longhorn Loudmouth' on to 'The Champ' before leaving the arena.
The Showstopper's contribution did not prove vital though as Cena somehow managed to kick out on two before going on to deliver the F-U for the victory.
Earlier in the night, gold changed hands when Edge defeated Jeff Hardy in a 'No Disqualification' match-up.
The rules, or lack of, played into the hands of the 'R-Rated Superstar' - a neat assist courtesy of the devious Vickie Guerrero and Jeff's brother, Matt of all people.
With his mind still in a muddle after relinquishing the ECW title and then failing to win it back in Detroit, Matt stunned the WWE Universe by slamming Jeff's head into a steel chair allowing the 'Ultimate Opportunist' to steal in for the win.
