Five-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan is out of the Shanghai Masters after he was beaten 5-2 by Michael Holt at the last-16 stage.

World No 4 Judd Trump also crashed out, defeated 5-3 by Michael White, while four-time world champion John Higgins lost 5-2 to Ali Carter.

O'Sullivan was playing in his first tournament since the World Championship but, having established an early 2-1 lead, he exited the event after losing four frames in a row to World No 28 Holt.

There were breaks of 103, 57, 44 and 64 from Holt, who told worldsnooker.com: "When you play Ronnie or the big players, you've got to stand up and not let their reputation make you play worse.

"Although Ronnie is better than me, he's not that much better than me that I can't win. In a one-off game, I know I can win."
