Brook v Gavin: Frankie Gavin says he won't shy away from exchanges
Friday 29 May 2015 13:02, UK
Frankie Gavin insists he won't shy away from trading punches with champion Kell Brook in Saturday's IBF world welterweight title clash at the 02 Arena.
Gavin's bid to add a world title to his world amateur title is the headline act of a sumptuous Sky Sports Box Office line-up that sees Kevin Mitchell and Lee Selby bid for world titles and heavyweight sensation Anthony Joshua take on brash American Kevin Johnson.
With Gavin a supremely gifted technician and the naturally smaller man having fought at lightweight previously, many expect the challenger to try and frustrate Brook by avoiding confrontation - but the Birmingham fighter was bullish on the issue of physicality.
He told Ringside at the final press conference before the fight: "I'm hard to beat and hard to hit. When I do get hit, it's not like I'm going to fold - I'm going to come back with one of my own.
"I'm not someone who's going to shy away from pressure and power. If I get hit and it hurts I'm going to try and hurt him, simple as that. I'm not going to back down from anybody."
Brook, who is undefeated and returned from a horrific stab wound to his leg to make an impressive first defence against Jo Jo Dan in March, is favourite to have too much for Gavin - but the underdog is unfazed by public opinion and is hoping to use the low expectations to his advantage.
"It's a fantastic position to be in. Whatever happens, I'm coming out in the same situation I was in before in the fans' eyes. At the end of the day, in my eyes, I've got a lot too lose and a lot to gain.
"Sometimes I've been in fights I've been so comfortable that I've just been sitting back and enjoying it, but I won't be able to do that. Kell's a great fighter and it's going to be a daunting task but it's one I'm ready for.
"People say I've underachieved as a professional but I've had 23 fights and won six titles. I was very close in the European fight - I thought I won. If I'd have won that, this would be the next fight that people would've been saying I can win.
"Just because I lost a very close fight to Leonard Bundu, people are writing me off but this is a fight that can win. I've just got to be me and just worry about me. It's what I do."
