Joshua vs Whyte: Anthony Joshua is latest big puncher to make explosive start to his career

Nigel Benn, Deontay Wilder, Mike Tyson

Anthony Joshua has blasted his way to 14 stoppage wins, but has still got work to do if he wants to match five other men with explosive starts to their careers.

The Olympic gold medallist has swept aside all his opponents since turning professional and will target a 15th KO win against Dillian Whyte at The O2 on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

But here is a list of destructive punchers who began their paid careers with a longer run of knockouts....

Mike Tyson, 19 stoppages

The 'Baddest Man on the Planet' held that nickname for good reason and cut a destructive path through his early opponents.

Recognised as one of the most fearsome punchers in heavyweight history, Tyson halted his first 19 opponents, with Jesse 'The Boogieman' Ferguson extending him to six rounds - his longest fight so far - before an uppercut broke the Philadelphia man's nose and his resistance.

Tyson's red-hot run was ended by a points win over James Tillis, who heard the final bell despite a fourth round knockdown, while he also had to settle for a points win over bitter foe Mitch 'Blood' Green in his very next fight.

Nigel Benn, 22 stoppages

The 'Dark Destroyer' will be remembered as one of Britain's most devastating punchers and none of his early foes could withstand the Londoner's concussive fists.

Benn appeared an unstoppable force as he raced to 22 stoppage wins, with American Reggie Miller offering a rare display of defiance before he wilted under another ferocious attack in the seventh round.

But Michael Watson would bring Benn's stoppage run and his unbeaten record to a juddering halt. Benn ran out of steam after his early onslaught and wearily remained on one knee after a sixth round knockdown.

Lucas Matthysse, 21 stoppages, 1 DQ, 1 NC

Lucas Matthysse

A modern day knockout artist, Matthysse has all the necessary qualities of big punchers from the past and there are few more menacing fighters in recent times than the heavily-tattooed Argentine.

None of Matthysse's first 23 opponents heard the final bell, including one no-contest due to a head clash, while another early foe was disqualified.

'The Machine' would have expected to roll over the little-known Carlos Adnan Jerez in his 24th fight, but was unable to detonate a decisive blow and had to settle for his first points win.

Edwin Valero, 27 stoppages

The heavy-hitting Venezuelan emerged as a cult figure for boxing fans as none of his first 18 fights lasted longer than a round.

Predictably he was taken beyond the early rounds in his first world title fight, but still managed to find a finishing punch while halting Vicente Mosquera in the 10th to claim the WBA super-featherweight title.

Valero's life would come to a sudden violent end as he committed suicide in a prison cell after being arrested following the fatal stabbing of his wife.

Deontay Wilder, 32 stoppages

The 'Bronze Bomber' has been billed as America's next heavyweight hope and has done little wrong so far, blitzing his way through a list of outgunned opponents.

At 6'7" tall, the towering Wilder swings away with spiteful punches and former WBO champion Siarhei Liakhovich was swept aside in a round, while fellow American Malik Scott was also halted within the first three minutes.

His sole points win came in his successful world title shot against Bermane Stiverne when Wilder surprised his critics by earning the WBC title with a disciplined display of boxing.
