Gennady Golovkin will continue his search for an opponent after talks over a unification bout with Billy Joe Saunders broke down.
The WBA Super, IBF and WBC interim world middleweight champion had hoped to face recently-crowned WBO holder Saunders in 2016.
But although the Englishman (23-0-KO12) initially expressed enthusiasm over the idea of facing the heavy-hitting Golovkin (34-0-KO31), the Kazakh's promoter has revealed negotiations are now on the rocks.
In an interview reported on World Boxing News, Tom Loeffler: "As we always said, unfortunately, we cannot force other champions to fight Gennady Golovkin.
"Billy Joe Saunders just had a big win to claim his title, so hopefully, he will fight GGG in the future. As for the future of Golovkin, we are still going through opponents to see what is the best option for his next fight,"
Golovkin, who stopped David Lemieux in the seventh round in his last bout to add the IBF crown to his collection, is now expected to turn his attentions to WBC champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
