Keith Thurman's promoter says the unbeaten WBA welterweight champion has been forced to postpone his upcoming fight with Shawn Porter after being injured in a car accident.
The 27-year-old was set to defend his WBA title at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut on March 12, but suffered a neck injury on Saturday as result of the accident and will now be unable to face Porter.
His promoter Lou Di Bella has insisted the injury is not serious or career threatening, but admits the American is lucky to have escaped major injury.
"I saw pictures of the car, and he's a very lucky young man," DiBella told Yahoo Sports.
Thurman has not been cleared to resume training by his doctors and is expected to be on the sidelines for between four and six weeks.
DiBella added: "While it's unfortunate that we must temporarily postpone this marquee matchup, a main event of the magnitude of Thurman vs. Porter requires both fighters be healthy and at their best.
"Keith is anxious to resume training as soon he is able and both he and Shawn are looking forward to a new fight date."
A new date for the fight is yet to be scheduled.
