Lucian Bute fails doping test in wake of Badou Jack fight

Lucian Bute of Canada

Former super-middleweight world champion Lucian Bute failed a doping test following last month's title clash with Badou Jack.

Bute, who lost to IBF champion James DeGale in November, tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine after battling to a majority draw against WBC holder Jack in Washington on April 30.

The WBC revealed on Thursday that the DC commission found Ostarine - which is prescribed for muscle wasting and osteoporosis - in a post-fight sample provided by the 36-year-old.

Bute, who held the IBF title from October 2007 until May 2012, has protested his innocence and said he is confident he will be cleared by his B sample.

"I don't understand what could have led to a positive test," Bute said in a statement. "I have always passed every test since I was world champion.

"Not long ago, before my fight with James DeGale in November, I was tested eight times from the start of training camp to the fight. I never took anything and I never used banned substances.

"I have complete confidence in my team. The B sample will be tested and I am sure the result will be negative."

Promoter Yvon Michel also said in the statement that he was surprised by the positive test.

"We hope that the test on the B sample shows it was a mistake," Michel said. "Until then, we solidly support Lucian Bute."
