The IBF champion produced another devastating finish on June 25 - finally sending the valiant Dominic Breazeale to the canvas in the seventh round.
The American visitor hadn't come to lie down under the bright lights of The O2 and it was immediately apparent that Joshua was in for a more difficult task in defending the belt than the one he'd faced in winning it.
Time after time, Breazeale tilted but wasn't toppled until at last, his defences were pierced with enough purpose to end the contest. Joshua, who had endured problems in training camp, had retained his crown with a display of patience.
There were countless big names at ringside to watch him do it, of course, and several of them awaited backstage to offer their congratulations.
