Undefeated welterweight Jose Benavidez is recovering after being shot while walking his dog in Phoenix.

Rising star Benavidez, who has previously held the WBA Interim super-lightweight title, was taken to hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to his leg and little finger.

"He was apparently walking in his neighborhood and was approached by a stranger, who asked him a question and then shot him," Sgt John Howard, a spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department, told ESPN.

"That is what he said. He was taken to a local hospital. He should recover. His injuries are not life threatening."

The 24-year-old beat Francisco Santana on the undercard of Terrence Crawford's super-lightweight defence in Las Vegas last month to claim his 25th straight win.
