Jesus Cuellar will be looking to release his frustration when he finally defends his WBA featherweight title against Abner Mares in Las Vegas on December 10.

The pair were originally scheduled to meet on June 25 in New York, but the bout was scrapped after Mares was unable to secure medical clearance for the fight, with reports suggesting he failed two NYSAC-administered eye exams.

Mares (29-2-1 KO15) was cleared to compete by the California State Athletic Commission last week and, having had to wait a further six months, Cuellar (28-1 KO21) says he is relishing the chance to go to "war" with the Mexican.

"This is the most important fight of my career as Mares is one of the best in this loaded featherweight division," the Argentine said.

Mares, a three-weight world champion, suffered a detached retina in 2008 and was forced to sit out for 11 months, with many questioning whether he would fight again.

But the 30-year-old returned from the injury to claim world titles at bantamweight, super-bantamweight and featherweight and is now targeting a fourth world title reign.
