Brook vs Spence: Jermell Charlo backs sparring partner Errol Spence Jr to beat Kell Brook
Thursday 6 April 2017 13:46, UK
Errol Spence Jr has been sparring super-welterweight world champion Jermell Charlo, who is backing him to take Kell Brook's title away.
Spence Jr is the mandatory challenger to the 'Special One', who is defending his IBF welterweight title at his beloved Bramall Lane, Sheffield, on May 27, live on Sky Sports Box Office.
Jermell Charlo, twin brother of Jermall, makes the first defence of his WBC strap in the division above against Charles Hatley on April 22, live on Sky Sports, and will then be coming to the UK to support Spence Jr.
With both fighters under the guidance of Derrick James in Dallas, Jermell Charlo expects his gym-mate to follow his lead and be crowned a world champion at Brook's expense.
"I am going to come back and help EJ after I fight because I think I have a better style then anybody he has been sparring with for Kell Brook," he told fightnews.com.
"Because Kell Brook moves a lot, he also punches, so he's like a boxer, puncher and so am I and just at different weight classes.
"I believe EJ is a world champion and I look at him as a world champion, the guy can fight, he's strong. At 147lbs, he is a very underrated fighter, people don't give him the respect, the power, he's good.
"He will get his chance this year and everybody will understand why I am saying this right now. That's it."
Jermell and Jermall Charlo, the holder of the IBF super-welterweight crown, made history last May when they became the first twins to hold world titles at the same time, in the same weight class.
Jermell Charlo won the WBC title by knocking out John Jackson in eight rounds and with Spence Jr sparring challenger Hatley in the past, he is expecting his current gym-mate to keep hold of his belt.
"He's look's great, he's in shape, he's looking sharp and he's looking prepared," he said.
"We have been sparring for probably about a month and half now, he looks great.
"It doesn't put me in an awkward position at all. At the end of the day I'm not the guy getting in the ring. That's Charlo and that's Hatley that are getting in the ring so it doesn't put me in an awkward position at all, may the best man win.
"I'm going for my coach, my coach is a Dallas trainer, he's my coach and we have been working together for a long time so I'm on the side of my coach. So of course I want my coach to have a lot of success, I want him to win."
Watch Jermell Charlo vs Charles Hatley on the Porter-Berto undercard from the Barclays Center, New York, on April 22, live on Sky Sports.
