Andre Dirrell's trainer and uncle sucker-punched Jose Uzcategui after the conclusion of a chaotic bout on Saturday night.
Leon Lawson struck Uzcategui, who had been disqualified for a punch after the bell, and is now being sought by Maryland police, according to Showtime.
The IBF interim super-middleweight title fight was set to deem the next challenger to James DeGale's championship.
Venezuela's Uzcategui had twice been warned about punches after the bell by referee Bill Clancy, but knocked Dirrell to the canvas after the conclusion of the eighth round.
Dirrell was unable to continue, leading the referee to award him a disqualification victory. Dirrell's uncle and trainer Lawson then caused further pandemonium as the result was clarified.
Gary Russell Jr defended his WBC featherweight title with a seventh-round stoppage of Oscar Escandon on the undercard.
Russell Jr had floored Escandon in the third but had to wait until the seventh to send him to the canvas again, before the referee intervened to confirm his third successful title defence.
