Shinsuke Yamanka beaten by Luis Nery for world bantamweight title

Champion Shinsuke Yamanaka (R) of Japan lands his right straight on Argentina's Diego Santillan during the WBC bantamweight title match in Osaka on April 1

Shinsuke Yamanaka’s six-year reign as WBC bantamweight champion was ended by Luis Nery on Tuesday in Japan.

Nery launched a fourth-round barrage forcing Yamanaka, stuck against the ropes, to be saved by the referee moments before his corner intervened.

Yamanaka was previously 27-0-2 including 12 successful defences. For Mexico's Nery, it was the first time he had boxed outside of his home country. The new champion remains unbeaten in 24 fights.

Yamanaka, 34, was previously rated at No10 on The Ring Magazine's pound-for-pound list but he left the ring in tears, bowing to his compatriots in the crowd.

Britain's Jamie McDonnell currently holds a version of the WBA bantamweight title while Lee Haskins is rated at No 8 by the WBC, although is still considered "unavailable".
