Santa Cruz vs Avalos: Carl Frampton and Lee Selby call Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares fights
Saturday 14 October 2017 07:32, UK
Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares defend their own WBA world featherweight titles, so who better to run the rule over the pair than Carl Frampton and Lee Selby?
Frampton is level at 1-1 after two featherweight showdowns with Santa Cruz while Selby has been linked with fighting Mares, but the two Mexicans look likely to face each other again, as long as they both come through Saturday's tests...
Abner Mares v Andres Gutierrez
Carl Frampton
I think this is actually more difficult than Santa Cruz's fight with Avalos. Gutierrez is a decent fighter and I see that Mares is disappointed that he's fighting Gutierrez instead of fighting Santa Cruz straight away.
I can't see it stopping them fighting each other, but this could be a tough one for Abner. I still see him being a bit too good for Gutierrez.
Lee Selby
Mares is very experienced and he does have fast hands and is a skilled boxer, if he wants to be. He does love a tear-up though and that can be his downfall.
Gutierrez's record looks good, but whenever I've seen him in the ring, he's been a big let-down. He looks like the sort that you can't miss - and I can't see Mares doing that. Mares might be smart on this one because he doesn't want to take any risks, so he will win on points.
Leo Santa Cruz vs Chris Avalos
Carl Frampton
I think it should be comfortable enough for Santa Cruz. The form of Avalos hasn't really been that great - he has been knocked out a few times since I beat him. But he did have a good win in his last fight.
What I did find out about Avalos is he's slow and predictable. I think Santa Cruz will be too much for him and will stop Avalos, probably in the middle rounds.
Lee Selby
Santa Cruz isn't stupid. He wouldn't take on someone who is a dangerous threat and Chris Avalos is not on his level.
You're talking about a guy that Carl Frampton got rid of in five, so this will be easy for Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is not the biggest puncher out there but it wouldn't surprise me if he stops him in the middle rounds.
