Kal Yafai hopes to set up Roman Gonzalez clash

Kal Yafai has reiterated his intention to take on Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez and the Brit would jump at the chance to head stateside for the clash.
Yafai, who made the second successful defence of his WBA world title back in October, says a date for his next outing will be confirmed very soon and the Birmingham super-flyweight hopes another victory could finally set up a clash with the Nicaraguan great.
Gonzalez has lost his previous two outings, albeit to pound-for-pound star Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, and Yafai admits the former four-weight world champion probably needs a win under his belt for anything to realistically come to fruition.
"We accepted the 'Chocolatito' fight before but for whatever reason, they decided against it," the 28-year-old began.
"Of course I am still desperate for it to happen, he's a legend of the sport and I want to test myself against the best.
"He's had those back-to-back losses so if he can come back and win well - I've heard he is fighting in May - then it sets it up perfectly for us.
"I've been told that I will probably be out again at the end of May myself and am just waiting for confirmation. I'm training full steam ahead and news should come soon."
The super-flyweight division has been blossoming in recent years, especially stateside, and Yafai is eager to start mixing it with fellow champions Sor Rungvisai (WBC) and Jerwin Ancajas (IBF) among others.
"I want that unification fight, I need that big name opponent now," the Birmingham favourite continued. "I want to make my name in America.
"I was due to fight on a big super-fly card earlier this year but we had a few issues with it all. I'm still confident I can get on another, I'd love the chance to showcase my skills against the best.
"It's a dream to fight in the USA and I'm well aware that it will be difficult to get the leading guys over here. When the phone call comes, we will jump. The smaller guys are getting the attention stateside and I want to be involved.
"If I can make another defence of my title, hopefully, we can then get the Gonzalez fight and then we want Sor Rungvisai on the back of that."
