Plenty of local pride will be at stake when Luke Campbell faces Tommy Coyle in Hull on Saturday. Which hometown fighter will have his hand raised? The Panel offer their predictions...
Glenn McCrory
It’s a terrific domestic dust-up between an Olympic champion and someone who knows him very, very well and has got no fear for him. He knows what he can and can’t do.
It could be fight of the year, because I think Tommy Coyle will get involved and will try to fight a different fight. He must try to rough Campbell up and he's had some great performances recently. He's had the harder introduction to the professional ranks – it's been much tougher for him. He's got a bit more under his belt professionally, he's got that experience and I think that levels the tables a little bit.
If you were asking me who I would put money on, then I would have to say Campbell, because he’s a great talent. But Coyle has a massive heart, massive fighting spirit, and I think he’s going to give him a hell of a fight. My final prediction will be a Campbell stoppage after eight thrilling rounds and he will have to come through his toughest fight.
Kell Brook
It is hard for me to actually pick a winner. I like both of the kids, they are both down to earth. I’ve grown up with them in the amateurs, I remember them, and now they are fighting each other.
Putting all that aside, I think the better boxer is Luke Campbell. He’s gone out there in the amateurs, he’s won the Olympic gold medal, and he’s really impressed me in the last couple of fights.
But Tommy Coyle is like a ‘Rocky’ story. Just look at the Michael Katsidis fight, where he needed just one punch and he showed he can definitely hit hard. He also gets put down and seems to get up and have a fight.
It’s definitely going to be very exciting while it lasts. I think I’m going to have to sway towards Campbell on a stoppage win.
Anthony Crolla
Like most people I've got Tommy down as the huge underdog but what I am interested to see is the man they call 'Cool Hand Luke'. This is the first time he has been in a fight this big and I'm interested to see if he is asked questions and how he answers them.
Tommy has to turn it into a dogfight but I am not sure he will be able to. I think he will do better than many people think but stylistically – at mid and long range – Luke will be too good. I don't think it will go the full 12 rounds either way, but I can see Campbell with a late stoppage.
Paul Smith
Local derbies bring out the best in fighters. We will definitely see the best Coyle there’s ever been – have you seen the shape he’s in? Jamie Moore will have developed a great gameplan for him.
Someone like Campbell hits you, hurts you and keeps you hurt. He’ll be the best lightweight we’ve got which is quite a statement because it’s a great division. Campbell is the future, but Coyle will ask questions.
Coyle can bang and Campbell hasn’t been hit yet so we’ll see what his whiskers are like. When you hit someone you’re at your most vulnerable so we’ll see if Campbell forgets what is coming back. We’ll know a lot more about him after this fight.
Campbell can stop Coyle at any point in the fight if he lands solidly – that’s not because of his power, it’s because of Coyle’s vulnerability. I’m not making stories up, we’ve seen fighters clip Coyle but he always comes back! He’s not got a bad chin and he’s great at recovering, but when anyone fights Coyle you know you’ve got a chance of hurting him. That makes every fight a dangerous one.
I can’t see anything but a Campbell stoppage. I see him hurting Coyle and putting him away early.
Scott Quigg
I am going the same way as the bookies are going. Tommy is a big underdog and I think we'll see why. I've got a lot of time for him and I know he works hard, but I think we could see Luke do a number on him.
It's all about levels and I just think there is more to come from Luke, in his first real test as a professional. I think Campbell can claim a stoppage quite quickly, maybe as early as the fifth round.
