Khan focused on defence

Amir Khan insists he is working hard on his defence after being knocked down for the first time in his fledgling career.

Commonwealth lightweight title holder striving to improve

Amir Khan insists he is working hard on his defence after being knocked down for the first time in his fledgling career against Willie Limond. The 20-year-old Olympic silver medallist eventually recovered to claim the Commonwealth lightweight title in July's bout, but the performance was unconvincing. Khan returns to the ring for a 12-round showdown against Stoke boxer Scott Lawton in Nottingham on October 6. And the Bolton starlet is undeterred by the problems he experienced in his last encounter. "Training is going well," Khan said. "I've been in the gym for about two weeks and I will start my sparring in the next couple of weeks. "There are a few things I've started working on from the last fight, tightening up my guard, having that lateral movement that wasn't there in the fight. "I've watched the video a few times and we're just working on the mistakes."

Part of the process

Khan insists it is part of his learning curve in the professional arena. "Every fight, I am learning and getting better and better. I'm getting better from every fight," he concluded. "I got knocked down in the last fight and I'll learn from that; to keep my hands up, get that lateral movement. I'm learning at the same time." Lawton has a record of 20 wins, with four by way of knockout, but suffered his third defeat challenging for the British title against Jon Thaxton last time out.
Weakness?
But promoter Frank Warren admits Lawton is hoping to capitalise on the flaws shown up in Khan's last outing. "It's a tough fight for Amir in his 14th fight," said Warren. "Scott is well respected in the trade and this is a real test for Amir after his last fight against Willie Limond. "Scott's people asked for this fight, as did a lot of people. They seem to think there's a chink in the armour. I don't think that's the case but obviously we'll find out on October 6."
