George Groves says he's hoping to face WBC super-middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell

George Groves believes a rematch with James DeGale will be bigger than his Carl Froch fights.

The European super-middleweight champion and his bitter rival are both on the undercard at Cleverly v Bellew II, live on Sky Sports Box Office, on Saturday night.

Groves won the first fight between them back in May 2011 and has since gone on to fight world champion Froch on two occasions, losing them both.

The second was an historic Wembley sell-out of 80,000 fans and any future showdown would be even bigger if both put world titles on the line.

If it is a unification fight against DeGale, with the history we've got, it'd be the biggest fight ever. It would far eclipse what me and Froch did.

"It would make for a massive fight," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"If it is a unification fight against DeGale, with the history we've got, it'd be the biggest fight ever. It would far eclipse what me and Froch did.

"The last Froch fight was extraordinary, the way it captured the public's imagination but there's more potential for more fights like that in the future.

"And if anyone is going to do it, it's probably me and James because we both have a story to tell."

Mandatory

Groves takes on Denis Douglin on Saturday night knowing that he is the mandatory challenger for the WBC super-middleweight world title, currently owned by Anthony Dirrell.

It could go to purse bids on December 15 while DeGale will find out later next month whether or not his mandatory IBF position will set up a fight with Froch in the new year.

Groves questioned why promoter Eddie Hearn has not been trying to sort it out earlier, since his long-term rival was confirmed as the IBF mandatory in May - and also included that champion in his dig.

"I think if you become mandatory challenger you deserve to fight the champion," he added. "Carl Froch will dine out on that, telling everybody that, every other sentence

"Yet it seems strange how he isn't interested in fighting James DeGale."
