Joshua vs Takam: Katie Taylor to fight for world title, while Cardiff's Joe Cordina gets hometown dream

Katie Taylor

Katie Taylor will fight for her first professional world title on the undercard of Anthony Joshua vs Carlos Takam in Cardiff on 28 October, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

The unbeaten Irish sensation will take on Argentina's Anahi Esther Sanchez, a two-weight world champion, for her WBA world lightweight belt at the Principality Stadium.

The announcement at Monday's press conference means there are now three world title fights on the blockbuster bill, with Kal Yafai's mandatory defence against Japan's unbeaten super-flyweight Sho Ishida completing the trio.

"This is something I've been waiting for since turning pro, I've always wanted to be involved in big fights on big shows, and I hope this is the first of many world title fights," Taylor said.

"Sanchez is a tough opponent, a two-weight world champ but I feel like I am ready. She is very experienced and has a great record as well.

"I want to make history in the sport. I feel like this is what I was born to do, to get this opportunity is a dream for me."

Promoter Eddie Hearn also confirmed that Cardiff's own Joe Cordina, a 2016 Rio Olympian, will box for a title in just his fifth pro fight on the bill as he realises his dream of fighting in the Welsh capital.
