Paul Appleby is aiming to become the youngest Scotsman to win a British title when he clashes with fellow countryman John Simpson at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow on Friday. The 20-year-old Appleby goes into the fight unbeaten in 11 professional contests, however defending featherweight champion Simpson will pose his toughest test. The Greenock-based 24-year-old has defended his crown twice since defeating Andy Morris in December 2006 - although he has two British title defeats and two WBU belt losses on his record during his 22-fight career. But Appleby, who is from Edinburgh, is confident he can fight his way into the record books. "This is the toughest fight of my life... it is the Lonsdale belt," Appleby told Sky Sports News. "If I win it I won't be the youngest winner in Britain, but I will be the youngest in Scotland, so that is good enough for me."

Hurt

Appleby has picked up eight knockouts in his 11 victories, however his all-attacking style has left him open to be hit on the counter. However the challenger will make sure he gives Simpson no chance to catch him. "I know that John could hurt me if my hands are low, so they will be high," he added. Despite being the reigning champion, Simpson has no doubt that he will have to be at his very best if he is to retain his title. "I will fight anybody as I have done throughout my career," he said. "I know Paul is a good fighter so I will have to be on my game on the night... which I will be."
