No love lost between super-featherweight rivals

Michael Gomez is confident of victory when he challenges Ricky Burns for the Commonwealth super-featherweight title in Glasgow on Friday evening, live on Sky Sports 2. The Manchester-based fighter knows he must dispatch Burns in style to reignite his dream of a world title shot. And the 31-year-old is optimistic about his chances having put together a run of three wins since his defeat to Amir Khan last June. "I'm going to smash his head in," promised Gomez. "I'm going to shine, I'm going to dazzle him and show you all. "One last chance (for me, and) I'm going to take it, snatch it and go on to become world champion. "This is the most important fight of my life - everyone goes on about all the other fights I've had, but they're gone."

Personality clash

Burns is making the second defence of the belt he claimed with a unanimous decision over Ghana's Osumanu Akaba six months ago. And the Scot, currently on a 10-bout winning streak, admits to having little time for the brash Gomez. "I would respect Michael Gomez a lot more if he didn't conduct himself the way he does," Burns told Sky Sports News. "As soon as we step in the ring all that is going out of the window - I'm going in there to smash him up. "Michael Gomez will be dangerous for five rounds but there is no way he's leaving here with that title. "I've trained for a hard, hard 12 rounds if it goes the distance - I doubt it, but if it does I'm ready."
