England's Jason Kenny was forced to settle for silver in the men's sprint after being beaten by New Zealand's Sam Webster in the deciding race in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

Kenny, the Olympic sprint champion, had kept his hopes alive after winning the second race after Webster had stormed into the lead with a dominant ride.

But the Manchester-born rider was unable to repeat the heroics of his earlier victories, where he had prevail in the repechage and come from behind in the semi-final, and was forced to take a second silver of the Games after the team sprint on day one.

After the race, Kenny said: "I'm happy to get a medal, I really enjoyed today, it was a tough day but we had some good racing in there and the crowd seemed to enjoy it which is always nice.

"To be up there racing against Webby, who is one of the quickest in the world, is nice to know because it shows I can mix it with the best.

"It was anyone's game today, but he raced the last sprint perfectly, he did just enough to put me off and shake me off his tail."

Edward Dawkins of New Zealand took third after beating Australia's Peter Lewis in the bronze medal race.
