Time comes as a surprise even to 21-year-old record-breaker

Australia's Jack Bobridge beat Chris Boardman's 15-year world record in the four-kilometre individual pursuit at the Australian Championships in Sydney. Bobridge clocked four minutes 10.534 seconds in qualifying for the national final, bettering Boardman's 4mins 11.114secs set in Manchester in 1996. It was widely thought Boardman's record was unbreakable due to the rule change banning his aerodynamic 'superman' position and the 21-year-old Bobridge admitted: "I can't really explain it at the moment, I am still stunned. "I didn't think that (record) was going to come for a long time, I certainly didn't think it would come while I was on the track. "To come around and see that on the board, I was honestly quite shocked. "I thought the clock had stopped a lap early, so I had to look at it a few times, but then I saw everyone going crazy, and then it started to get a little overwhelming." Bobridge's time came after watching his fellow South Australian Rohan Dennis clocking 4:13.399 during his heat - the third fastest time in history behind Boardman. The duo will meet in the final. The individual pursuit has been removed from the Olympic track cycling programme for London 2012 in a reshuffle by the International Cycling Union.
