Premier League Darts: Who would you choose to complete the line-up?
Sunday 3 January 2016 23:02, UK
We asked oche MC John McDonald to select his 10 players for the Premier League Darts 2016 campaign.
The real roster, which will be announced after the conclusion of the World Darts Championship final, is guaranteed to include the top four PDC ranked players, leaving six spots up for grabs.
PDC chiefs will choose four of the six and the remaining two will be wild cards - but, just for fun, we debated which of your arrow-throwing friends might make the cut with McDonald...
McDonald said: The Premier League is extremely important because it travels around cities in the UK and Ireland, and now Holland, and showcases the best talent. People come along and see a mini World Championship every night.
You need to pick players that entertain and are in a position to compete. There is a curse where anybody who joins the Premier League struggles in their first year. I don't know why!
I'd like to see DAVE CHISNALL in it because he's a big scorer and he's popular with the crowd. He's grown in popularity, he just gets on with his game. ADRIAN LEWIS picks himself, particularly if he wins the World Darts Championship! He's always there or thereabouts. JAMES WADE will be in. He's got to be in.
I'd put RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD in it because, don't forget, we're going to Holland this year. That event has sold out before we know who's in the Premier League. It will be a mega occasion in Holland if he plays.
JELLE KLAASEN, six or seven years ago, won a PDC ranking event but has never set anyone on fire. It could well be a given that he'll be in the Premier League after his World Darts Championship performance. I'd be inclined to go for somebody young like MICHAEL SMITH who is big scoring.
I would choose someone - because I know how much the fans love him and I know he can compete on the biggest stage - like SIMON WHITLOCK. He's an interesting character because he brings us a lot of international flair. We have a massive fan-base in Australia which is important to the building of the game.
I might even put the World Youth champion MAX HOPP in because it's something different. We owe youngsters a duty of care. Knowledge dispels fear - the more you know, the less you fear. If you're good enough you're old enough. I think we should say, 'We've given you a stage and you've won the youth title so, because of that, we'll give you encouragement'.
