Peter 'Snakebite' Wright believes debutant Michael Smith will find their match 'daunting and scary' on the opening night of the Premier League.

Smith earned his place by reaching the quarter-finals at the recent World Darts Championship and will face Wright on night one at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on Thursday, February 4, live on Sky Sports.

Wright respects the 25-year-old, but has questioned whether he is ready for the red-hot atmosphere in the Premier League and hopes to dish out a humbling defeat.

It's going to be daunting and scary for him and I'm glad it's in the Premier League, because he's an excellent player.

"It's a big advantage, especially playing in Leeds," said Wright. "Ten thousand people screaming 'Snakebite, Snakebite.' He's going to hate it.

"It's going to be daunting and scary for him and I'm glad it's in the Premier League, because he's an excellent player. But I'm going to go out there and try and whitewash him - and go 'welcome to the Premier League'.

Van Gerwen finished at the top of last year's rankings, collecting almost £1m in prize funds from his tournament wins.

Wright is determined to end his wait for a major title this year and insists he can perform to the same high standard as the sport's top player.

"The target is to win everything I go into," said Wright. "I believe I've got the game that Michael van Gerwen had most of the year against everybody and I believe I've got that game to win every single tournament I enter.

"If I don't do that, I'll get back on the practice board and make sure I do."
