The entertaining novelty of Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams at the Grand Slam of Darts is drawing to a close after a second defeat, this time to Max Hopp, on Sunday night.
BDO legend Adams was greeted by the usual wolf howls of his adoring support but fell to a 5-3 defeat to World Youth champion Hopp, who is 40 years his junior.
Adams issued a reminder of his quality with 103 and 156 checkouts but Hopp was always a step ahead, and after missing six darts to finish the match, finally crossed the line.
Michael van Gerwen, who gave Adams his first loss, still has maximum points after a 5-2 thumping against Brendan Dolan.
The mighty Dutchman needed just 25 darts to power to a 2-0 lead and would have secured a whitewash, but for four missed doubles that allowed Dolan to spare his own blushes. Van Gerwen made up for it with a 126 check-out on the bull.
Adrian Lewis' aspirations are in tatters after a second shock defeat, this time to world No 60 Chris Dobey. In the same group, Benito van de Pas has gone top of the pile after beating the BDO's Scott Mitchell 5-1.
Two-time world champion Lewis lost his opening match and despite a positive start, was beaten 5-3 by Dobey after missing two crucial doubles to tie the score at 4-4.
Phil Taylor continued his cruise towards the knock-out stages, racking up a successive 5-1 win, with Ian White his latest victim.
Taylor remains top of Group D but Darryl Fitton, after a 5-4 win against Darren Webster, could join him in the next round.
Gary Anderson, the PDC world champion, continued his romp by officially qualifying for the next round with a whitewash of the overmatched Nathan Derry. Also in Group E, the BDO's top player Glen Durrant earned his first Grand Slam win by beating Alan Norris 5-1.
