Lakeside legend Martin Adams made it through to the quarter-finals of the BDO World Darts Championships after an impressive 4-1 victory over Jeff Smith but former winner Scott Mitchell bowed out.

The former three-time champion missed five match darts against the Canadian, before completing victory on double one to move through.

Adams lost to Smith in the first round last year but got his revenge as he struck seven 180s and averaged a shade under 90.

The fifth seed will meet Jamie Hughes in the quarter-finals after the Englishman beat Jim Williams 4-1 in the evening session.

But another former winner - Scott Mitchell - crashed out after a second-round defeat to Geert de Vos.

The 2015 champion struggled to find his best form as his Belgian opponent ran out a 4-2 winner to book his place in the quarter-finals for the first time in his career.

De Vos trailed 2-1 in sets when he suddenly produced back-to-back 11-darters to begin a run of five straight winning legs and surge into a 3-2 set lead.

The 15th seed, who fired 10 180s and finished with an average of 92.28, dropped just one more leg in the sixth set to complete victory and set up a clash with either Pip Blackwell or Darryl Fitton.

In the last of the women's first-round matches to be played, eighth seed Corrine Hammond of Australia claimed a 2-0 victory over Canada's Patricia Farrell and next faces Casey Gallagher, who shocked top seed Deta Hedman on Tuesday.

Wednesday evening's matches saw top seed and favourite for the title Glen Durrant pushed all the way in a Lakeside classic.

The man from Middlesbrough emerged triumphant against fellow Englishman Paul Hogan, Durrant winning 4-3 in the final match of the night.

Also victorious was Daryl Fitton, he beat Pip Blackwell to move into the quarter-final as he seeks a first ever appearance in the final. The two-time semi-finalist will next face De Vos in the last eight.
