Glen Durrant to face Mark McGeeney in BDO Championship final at Lakeside
Sunday 14 January 2018 11:13, UK
Glen Durrant moved a step closer to successfully defending his BDO Championship title after brushing aside Scott Waites to set up a final clash with Mark McGeeney at Frimley Green.
Durrant and Waites were involved in nine-set thrillers on Friday, both players coming from 4-1 behind to beat Jim Williams and Andy Baetens respectively, but Saturday's semi-final between the pair was straight forward.
Number-one seed Durrant, who defeated Danny Noppert in last year's showpiece, averaged 96.61 and hit six maximums as he eased to a 6-2 victory over the 2016 world champion.
Durrant will now face McGeeney in Sunday's final after the world number one ended debutant Michael Unterbuchner's fairytale week.
The 29-year-old, having advanced through qualifying, became the first German to win on the Lakeside oche when eliminating third seed Jamie Hughes and he followed that giant-killing up with triumphs over Martin Phillips and Richard Veenstra.
But he ran into second seed McGeeney in the last four and, despite fighting back from two sets down to level, was edged out 6-4.
In the women's draw, Lisa Ashton won her fourth world title with a 3-1 victory over Anastasia Dobromyslova.
