Darts World Championship: Peter Wright and Gary Anderson to face each other in quarter-finals
Tuesday 30 December 2014 17:52, UK
Scotland's Peter Wright and Gary Anderson will face each other in the World Championship quarter-finals after both easing to victory in their last 16 ties on Tuesday.
Wright, last year's beaten finalist, was first on the oche at Alexandra Palace and made light work of Andy Hamilton, winning 4-0.
The world No 5 looked in convincing form as he breezed past Hamilton with a match average just over 102. During the match Wright - nicknamed Snakebite - threw five 180s and hit half of the 24 doubles he attempted. Hamilton struggled throughout, winning just four legs and throwing an average of 90.59.
Wright will now face fellow Scotsman Gary Anderson in the quarter-finals on Thursday. Anderson surprisingly lost the opening set to Spanish qualifier Cristo Reyes - conqueror of Wes Newton and Kevin Painter - who averaged a dominant 115.
But it didn't take long for Anderson to find his usual fluid style. The 'Flying Scotsman' is one of the favourites for the title and his response to going a set down showed the resilience required to mount a serious challenge.
Anderson averaged 104.5 in the 4-1 win as he hit eight 180s and 17 140-plus scores.
After the match he told Sky Sports Darts: "I thought I played like my average was about 75."
"I was going all right, Cristo played well at some points, first set I thought 'here we go again, he's going to pinch a couple of sets and it's going to go a long way', but I got the job done and that's the main thing."
Van der Voort
In the final match of the afternoon session, Holland's Vincent van der Voort held out to beat Dean Winstanley 4-2.
Van der Voort had eased into a 2-0 lead, with Winstanley struggling to find a decent average and having trouble on the doubles. But the Buxton thrower pulled himself back in the game and hit back to take the third and fifth sets on throw to pile the pressure on Van der Voort, who then had to throw for the match in the sixth.
Winstanley had a chance to save his tournament at two legs all in the sixth set but failed to hit his doubles and Van der Voort punished him with game shot. The Dutchman will play either Phil Taylor or Kim Huybrechts in Thursday's quarter-final.
