First win for Taylor

The Dutchman, who claimed the Unibet Masters earlier this month, registered a 109.44 average against the Premier League newcomer at the BIC in Bournemouth, racing into a 5-1 lead that included two 13-dart legs.

Bunting rallied to win successive legs but he was punished for two missed darts at double top in the 10th leg as Van Gerwen sealed victory with a 138 checkout.

World champion Gary Anderson, who faces Van Gerwen in Liverpool next week, was in equally fine form as he thumped a struggling Peter Wright 7-1 in the opening game of the night.

Wade blows away the Hurricane

Wright claimed the opening leg but ‘The Flying Scotsman’ responded in style, hitting four ton-plus finishes as he won seven successive legs to maintain his 100 per cent start.

Having suffered a narrow defeat to Anderson last week, Phil Taylor picked up his first victory with an emphatic 7-2 success over fellow Stoke native Adrian Lewis.

Taylor broke his opponent on four occasions, winning six legs on the spin with a 108.33 average as Lewis’ scoring plummeted.

Anderson maintains winning start

The fourth game of the night was also a one-sided affair as James Wade cruised to a 7-2 victory over Kim Huybrechts. The 2009 Premier League winner was in clinical form, finishing with a 70 per cent checkout rate to consign his opponent to back-to-back defeats.

The final match went the distance as Dave Chisnall edged a dour struggle with defending champion Raymond van Barneveld.

Van Barneveld looked on course for victory when he grabbed the game’s first break in the ninth leg, but Chisnall responded with three legs on the trot to record his second victory in as many weeks.
