What to bet on at the PDC World Cup of Darts

Raymond van Barneveld & Michael van Gerwen, World Cup of Darts 09062014

The betting odds suggest only three nations are in with a realistic chance of winning the PDC World Cup of Darts, which kicks off on Thursday, live on Sky Sports 1HD.

Netherlands and England are the joint tournament favourites in Frankfurt, with Sky Bet unable to separate the nations at 7/4 apiece.

Scotland are the only other country set to offer a competitive edge, with Peter Wright and Robert Thornton given a 3/1 chance of landing the prize.

Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis will be representing England, but the Netherlands boast an equally deadly duo of Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld, who won the competition together last year.

Norway, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and India will all make their debuts in the 32-team tournament, but their odds all range from 400/1 to 1000/1.

England get their campaign up and running against Denmark on Thursday, with the Danes rated 6/1 underdogs, so there’s little value in backing an England win at 1/12.

Sky Bet odds:

England, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Netherlands all to win their first round ties - 1/1

The first round, incidentally, is a best of nine legs, and England will get a look at their main rivals Netherlands on Friday as they’re expected to make light work of the USA in their opener.

Scotland are also expected to begin with a routine win on Friday as they’re 1/10 to beat Singapore, but it’s difficult to make a case for Wright and Thornton over England and Netherlands in the outright betting.

Northern Ireland (40/1) and the Republic of Ireland (125/1) will also be represented and both are odds-on to get off to a winning start on Friday against Thailand and Poland respectively.

With Netherlands being the holders, Sky Bet’s advice is to put faith in the tried and tested – back Van Gerwen and Van Barneveld to retain the PDC World Cup at 7/4.
