Steve Farmer caused a shock in the opening round of the PDC World Championship, knocking out Ronnie Baxter.
Wins for Klaasen, Thornton and Tabern on Saturday afternoon
Ronnie Baxter was a first-round casualty at the PDC World Championship, beaten 3-2 by fellow Englishman Steve Farmer on Saturday afternoon.
In a topsy-turvy contest, Farmer won the first five legs but lost six of the next eight to leave Baxter leading by two sets to one.
At 1-1 in the fourth set, Farmer produced a 14-darter and then broke Baxter's throw to force a decider.
And the 46-year-old from Telford won the next two legs to leave himself on the brink of victory.
Blackpool thrower Baxter stayed alive with a double-eight finish but Farmer closed it out in the next leg on double top.
Pure Klaas
Jelle Klaasen had earlier scored his first television victory in 18 attempts with a 3-1 triumph over Peter Wright.
The Dutchman, a former BDO world champion, won six consecutive legs to take the opening two sets, and although Wright responded by taking the third, Klaasen won the fourth to seal his progress.
Klaasen took advantage of Wright's poor finishing to take the opening set. The Scot hit a 180 in the third leg but missed four darts at doubles, and Klaasen punished him with a 100 checkout.
The second set followed a similar pattern, Klaasen profiting from more missed doubles by Wright, and he fired a maximum followed by double 16 to take firm control.
After 11 missed darts at doubles, Wright was finally successful in the first leg of the third set, which he went on to win 3-1, and he also took the opening game of the fourth.
However, Klaasen then secured a vital break of throw by hitting double top and an accurate dart at double 16 sealed an excellent win.
Robert Thornton also booked a place in the last 32 with a 3-1 success over Stoke's Ian White.
The Scots will now face Adrian Lewis, who defeated Thornton on his way to capturing the title last year, in the second round at Alexandra Palace on Thursday.
Thornton took the opening set which went with the darts, but White hit back to level thanks to two breaks in the second set.
Two 13-dart finishes in the third set put the Scot back in front and he then rallied from 2-0 down in the fourth set, sealing the victory with a superb 11-dart finish in the deciding leg.
Scare
Alan Tabern also made it through to the second round with a 3-1 win, but the man from St Helens was given a scare by Christian Perez of the Philippines.
Perez, who had earlier beaten Austria's Dietmar Burger 4-0 in a best-of-seven legs preliminary round match, was facing a whitewash when he trailed 1-0 in the third set after losing the first two sets.
However, he launched a superb fightback by winning four straight legs and appeared on course to set up a deciding set as Tabern lost his way.
Perez failed to take out 56 to win the fifth leg of the fourth set, though, and Tabern stepped in with a 122 finish to claim the victory with a big sigh of relief.
