2009 champion continues poor run at Silverstone after botched pit stop
Jenson Button suffered more disappointment at the British Grand Prix when a pitlane error cost him the chance of a first ever podium finish at Silverstone.
The 2009 world champion's best result in 12 races at the Northamptonshire track is a fourth place, a result he looked capable of beating on Sunday.
The latest blight on his record came on lap 40 of an enthralling race, when McLaren's pit crew failed to secure his car's right-front wheel at a pit stop.
Button pulled away but was forced to grind to a halt just yards later as he was about to rejoin the track.
"When I headed out, as I turned up hill the wheel came off," Button explained. "It's very disappointing.
"We all make mistakes but you always hope they will never happen."
Button insisted he had been in contention for a podium position prior to the incident, having run a close fifth behind Red Bull's Mark Webber.
Webber eventually finished third in the race, behind Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and team-mate Sebastian Vettel.
Starting fifth on the grid, Button had recovered after a poor opening stint on intermediate tyres, the legacy of a rain shower in the hour before the race got under way.
Disappointment
Button's podium bid - and that of team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who finished fourth - was made despite McLaren appearing to lose out after the FIA clamped down on the use of off-throttle blown diffusers.
"It's disappointing because it was in front of the home crowd - good couple of battles out there and the pace was very good before my stop," Button continued.
"It was all looking pretty sweet and I think I would have come out alongside Mark, if not ahead of Mark, when I made my pit stop.
"So much could have happened and there's always the possibility of a podium when you are that far up and the pace is good."
Button added: "Sorry to the fans. I wish we could have done more but it seems that way for me at the British Grand Prix in the last few years."
