Caterham - Problem a one-off

Caterham confirm rear track-rod failure stopped Heikki Kovalainen out on track on Tuesday, but aren't expecting the problem to reoccur.

Team traced morning problem to a rear track-rod failure

Mike Gascoyne is confident the problem that cost Caterham much of the opening day of the Barcelona test won't reoccur, after the team managed to fix the issue at the circuit. Having racked up the third highest total of laps two weeks ago at Jerez, the Anglo-Malaysian squad saw their CT01 grind to a halt after just nine laps on Tuesday and have to be carted back to the pits on the back of a truck. The team traced the problem to a rear track-rod failure but Caterham technical chief Gascoyne reckons the fact they managed to get Kovalainen back out onto the circuit late in the day for a further 22 laps, and also have new parts arriving overnight, means the problem should be a one-off. "We had a rear track rod failure on Heikki's third run this morning which brought him to a halt on track," he said. "As soon as we had the car back in the garage we identified the issue and managed to fix it on site, and we have more parts coming out tonight to make sure we don't have the same problem again. "We know that this car is fundamentally reliable, so the aim for the next three days is to complete the plan for this test and put ourselves back on schedule." Kovalainen, whose late re-appearance on the track saw him improve his best lap time to 1:26.035, was philosophical about the setback and expressed confidence the team would get back on track. "That obviously wasn't how we wanted day one here to go, but that's what testing is for - pushing everything to the limit to make sure we get rid of the problems before we get to the first race," he said. "It's hard to learn a lot from limited laps, but I'm back in the car on Friday and I'm sure we'll be able to push on with the program between now and then and make sure we get as much as we can out of the next three days on track." With Kovalainen returning to the car for Friday's final day, Vitaly Petrov will get his first run-out for Caterham over the next two days following the announcement last week that he had replaced Jarno Trulli for 2012.
